Animators

Skilful animation is key in bringing a subtle, yet important, emotional dimension to the gameplay in Frontier's projects.  We are looking for animators who can combine our flexible and intuitive authoring pipeline with dynamic in-game behaviours to deliver memorable character performances. Depending on the project need, we also incorporate motion-capture as source material for our animations.

Our in-house animation engine combines a flexible and intuitive authoring pipeline for the animators with dynamic in-game behaviours to deliver memorable character performances.

In-game characters can use multi-layered blending, mirroring and additive animation to give endless variation to a base move without the need for many time-consuming and tedious variations to be hand-animated.

This is combined with our proprietary IK and physics-based animation system which takes familiar ragdoll physics and applies intelligent animation-based behaviour synthesis so characters can react to forces and events in their dynamic environment whilst still maintaining poses and motion defined by the animator.

Believable acting and emotion is also aided by our facial animation system which simulates facial musculature to give subtle and natural looking facial performances that look compelling and alive.

Skills development is encouraged at Frontier through regular group critiques, free life-drawing classes and exchange of ideas within the team.  Our animators often have to work closely with our exceptional code team so good communication skills are essential.

Successful candidates will possess a passion for animation and a strong interest in gaming, as well as the ability to portray convincing motion of a wide variety of subjects. Animations here are generated in 3D Studio Max and Character Studio - experience of 3DS Max is therefore advantageous. Industry experience is important but not essential, as long as you have examples of high quality work that you have done. These do not need to relate to a game, but should show off your talent.

Please apply either by email (including a CV and showreel) to animatorjobs@frontier.co.uk, or by surface mail to the address on the ‘contact us’ page of this website.  Showreels submitted on DVD or CD-ROM are preferred.

If applying by email please include a link to your showreel or attach copies of your best work to the email.

Emails bigger than 20 Mbyte (including attachments) will be automatically rejected.

Preference will be given to candidates who apply directly to us and are EU citizens currently resident in the UK.  Salaries offered will depend on skills & experience.

We are not looking for applicants who wish to work from home, or on a freelance basis.
